SCOTT POWER CELL BATTERY MEETS
MILITARY SPECIFICATION MIL-B-8565J
MILITARY SPECIFICATION # MIL-B-8565J
THE SCOTT POWER CELL BATTERY BY CONCORDE BATTERY COMPANY
EXCEEDS MILITARY SPECIFICATION MIL-B-8565J FOR HIGH TEMPERATURE
AND LOW HYDROGEN GAS EMISSION BATTERY SAFETY TEST
The Scott Power Cell Battery by Concorde, designed for critical and emergency power systems, including
UPS, telecommunications and emergency lighting and other float voltage applications was submitted to the
U.S. Department of the Navy for testing and exceeded military specification MIL-B-8565J, for high
temperature and low hydrogen gas emission safety test.
THE TEST
The MIL-SPEC (Military Specification) test involves utilizing a fully charged battery, heating it to over 131
degrees (Potential Thermal Runaway Conditions) and then overcharging the battery to 16.1VDC. This is to
simulate a shorted cell. The whole process is completed in a temperature-altitude chamber.
Air samples are then removed during the test and injected into a gas chromatograph, which measures the
percentage of hydrogen present. Four point one percent (4.1) hydrogen gases is required for flammability
in air; and a measure of less than three point five percent (3.5) hydrogen emission is required by the U.S.
Government to pass this test.
Additionally, upon completion, the battery must function normally.
THE RESULTS
Each Scott Power Cell by Concorde battery passed the gas emission test in MIL-SPEC B-8565J (Section
4.6.22). No battery generated over one percent hydrogen gas in any test section. The results equate to
over 99 percent recombinant gas efficiency, even during a simulated-shorted cell overcharge.
While these standards subjected the battery to significant abuse, they also represent real situations
encountered with defective charging systems.
Scott Batteries and the Concorde Battery Company acknowledge that no batteries are non-explosive, and
that anything; even solid metals can be made to explode under the wrong set of circumstances.
However, the facts speak for themselves.
The batteries have proven that they are among the safest lead acid Stand-by, UPS batteries available.
ADDITIONAL CERTIFICATION BY UNDERWRITERS LABORATORIES
UL 924 – Emergency Lighting and Power Equipment
UL 1989 – Standard for Safety for Standby Batteries
UL Recognized Component
Testing performed by Underwriters Laboratories has found the batteries in compliance with UL 924 and UL
1989. The batteries are a listed UL recognized component.
